The Mel's Milers 10k takes place annually, usually the last Sunday of March or the first Sunday in April. The tenth staging of the race will take place on Sunday 1st April 2012. With around 300 entrants it is has a friendly atmosphere and a fantastic setting, starting and finishing in the avenue next to the quadrangle of Christ's Hospital school. Bluecoat Sports Centre provides the race HQ, with shower and changing facilities as well as the cafe upstairs.
The race is on mixed terrain which is mostly off-road, taking in a lap of the school grounds before heading off to Southwater along the Downs Link, through the CountryPark, and back along the Downs Link. In dry conditions this can be a fast course, being mainly flat and also an ideal first-time race.
Prizes are awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd men and ladies, as well as age category awards for over 40, over 50 and over 60 men and women. To encourage more younger runners the entry age has been lowered to 15, and additional prizes will be awarded to the first under 20 and under 17 male and female runners.
Each year a donation is made to a charity from the proceeds of the race. The 2012 charity is the Chestnut Tree Hospice. Previous charities supported include the Mary How Trust, Ingfield Manor and Help for Heros, Springboard and Sussex Air Ambulance.
