As soon as the evenings start getting lighter, we all look forward to a reason for an extra run in the week and a chance to socialise. Suitable for all abilities, they are usually 5 or 6 miles, running for about an hour, and a drink or meal at the end.
For example in 2018 we started with the first run on 1st May from the White Horse in Maplehurst with the last one on the 4th September along the seafront at Shoreham, that makes 19 in total! We have some tried and trusted routes but anyone is welcome to come up with a new one, starting point anywhere within a 10 mile radius of Horsham. This year as well as the above we have been to Warnham, Rowhook, Dialpost, Walliswood, Colgate, Worthing, Nuthurst, Ashington, Rusper and Parham and more….
We occasionally manage to organise a trip to the theatre in London, last year twenty or so of us saw Motown and early in 2019 we are going to see the Tina Turner musical. There are good discounts for groups of 20 or more so it makes sense to get a party together, anyone can suggest an event and we can use the club email to drum up some interest.
We are soon to be holding our first wine tasting event and if this proves popular (we’re runners, why wouldn’t it!) it could become a regular feature on the calendar.
In Summer we rely on one of our members to generously offer to host our summer party; we all bring a dish and the club provides the liquid refreshment. It’s a great chance to bring along our partners to get to know some of our running mates and relax on a lovely summer’s evening.
For the Christmas Dinner, our member, Jane Stephens, manages to twist a few arms to get us a fabulous deal at a central Horsham venue, and we have tried a few over the years. Time to get into the festive spirit and put all thoughts of Marathon training aside for an evening!
Since 2003 the Club has organised an annual trip abroad to usually participate in a half marathon. Locations have included Bruges, Jersey, Prague, Malta, Barcelona, Lake Maggiore, Lisbon, Naples, Seville and most recently Portofino. Whilst these trips do involve a race, the emphasis is very much on the social element and getting to know each other better.
The Book Group meets monthly over lunch at Sumner’s Ponds, usually on the first Friday of each month at 12.30pm.
It is open to members of Mel’s Milers or any other interested readers who enjoy meeting for food and convivial conversation. It is low-key and we aim to exchange the titles of recently-read novels as well as making sure that we know which titles we are going to read and discuss for the next two months. Titles are chosen on a consensus basis. These are usually recently-published fiction titles which are available from libraries, in paperback or as e-books. In the past few months we have looked at the work of authors such as Gail Honeyman, Jon McGregor and Erik Axl Sund.
